Things must do in Hoi An - the “Light to Sky” in Hoi An Ancient Town

1. Temple Bridge: Where the boundaries of time and space meets

The architectural complex of Hoi An is incredibly rich and exquisite, making it a timeless destination that attracts both domestic and international visitors. A trip to Quang Nam would be incomplete without visiting the "symbol of Hoi An" – the Temple Bridge, also known as the Japanese Bridge, which has stood for over 400 years. Situated at the intersection of Nguyen Thi Minh Khai and Tran Phu streets, this wooden bridge gracefully arches over a canal leading to the Hoai River. Spanning 18 meters, the bridge is constructed from wood on stone pillars, with a tiled roof facing the Thu Bon River.

Above the main entrance, a large plaque bears the inscription "Lai Vien Kieu" in Chinese characters. Although the bridge was built by the Japanese, it is deeply imbued with Vietnamese architectural elements. The bridge features statues of two pairs of animals (a pair of dogs and a pair of monkeys) at either end. Local legend suggests these statues mark the bridge's construction period, beginning in the Year of the Monkey and finishing in the Year of the Dog.

Another theory links the statues to a Japanese folk belief in a deity that guards against the mythical catfish, Namazu, though no definitive records support this. Despite its name, the Temple Bridge does not house any Buddha statues. Instead, the central hall, referred to as the "temple," contains a wooden statue of Bac De Tran Vo, a deity believed to protect the area and bring good fortune, peace, and happiness.
